The Italian Coffee Shop, Espresso meets HistoryDuring the 18th and 19 Century, the italian coffee shop increasingly took over the role of literary and cultural circles. The most famous in Italy were the "Circolo Aragno" in Rome, the "Circolo Michelangelo" in Florence and the "Circolo Fiorio" in Turin, but in all Italian and European cities, there were these cultural encounters. Over the centuries many have maintained their pomp and cultural purpose, especially in Italy, which could actually be construed as an endorsement of the predilection of this country for the black drink.
Famous CafesIn Italy, there is perhaps still the greatest number of historic cafes.
They are evidence of the past and the role of coffee houses and thus the coffee in the social, economic and cultural development, even today the italian coffee shops are a favorite meeting place for the international society. In some coffee houses debates are conducted and conferences organized or concerts are being held in the best tradition of French café chantant. History alive in VeniceImaginative Italian legends surround the most famous and oldest of the coffee houses, the Venetian Cafe Florian (1720). It can be found right on St. Mark's Square under the arcades of the Palace of the Magistrates, but in many small venues that carry their own names (saletta »cinese", "Greca", "dei quadri", "del Senato") and one of them was made available again to the public after a long restoration period, to enjoy a little espresso. On the walls you can admire frescoes, paintings and gold inlays, wood and marble tables and chairs, which were previously used by Casanova, Parini, D'Annunzio, Goethe, Dickens, Proust, and many other famous people are still well preserved. Here, after the year 1760 several magazines were founded, including the "Gazzetta Veneta" by Gaspare Gozzi. The reason was such a simple rite of drinking coffee here obtained special solemnity and dignity. Maybe it's the wonderful features of the rooms or the stunning, unique feeling of sitting at the small tables on St. Mark's Square where it is so convenient to admire the palaces and the basilica.
The Coffee Temple in PaduaThe Cafe Pedrocchi in Padua is younger than the Florian and the Greco: It was opened in 1831 by Antonio Pedrocchi, who took over an old modest italian coffee shop from his father. Plans and design were made by the Venetian architect Giuseppe Jappelli. The Cafe Pedrocchi, which was completely renovated recently, to give effect to the marble floors and walls to reclaim the glory, and nowadays it is like a "temple" for the world of coffee. At the entrance stone lions guard the guests who sit outdoors in front of the cafe in the summer, in the interior of the ground floor in the main hall, where you can drink your espresso with pleasure at a carved marble coffee counter. Upstairs about ten different decorated rooms entertain, where you can sit comfortably at the small tables in the winter. The cafe is a blend of different architectural Pedrocchi styles that perhaps might be a bit risky, but certainly gives a pleasant impression. You should take your time to view the halls at your leisure. To meet the demands and needs of a diverse clientele of tourists and city residents working in the center, the manager of the Pedrocchi has decided to set up a special counter for hurried customers and to reserve the magnificent ancient halls for the demanding audience.
